Black Gate 3 Year Old opens with a rich and smoky nose, far bolder than its young age might suggest. The aroma carries weight and presence: charred oak, BBQ smoke, dark molasses, and hints of leather mingle with notes of roasted malt and dried dates. Underneath the intensity, there’s a thread of eucalyptus and scorched herbs—wild and distinctly Australian. On the palate, it delivers full-bodied flavor with a punchy texture. Smoked caramel and treacle toffee dominate the first impression, followed by burnt orange peel, espresso grounds, and hints of tobacco. The peat is robust and earthy—not Islay-style brine, but dry, ashy campfire smoke mixed with peppery spice and dense oak. There’s a chewy richness that gives it serious gravitas. The finish is long and lingering, coating the mouth with embers of oak char, cacao nibs, and a bitter-sweet echo of liquorice and smoke. A touch of herbal menthol peeks through at the very end, reminiscent of the Australian bush after rain.
