Vibrant, earthy, and full of Highland character, the Blair Athol 8 Year Old from That Boutique-y Whisky Company offers a youthful yet flavour-packed take on one of Scotland’s most underrated distilleries. Best known as a key malt in Bell’s blends, Blair Athol here shines on its own — raw, spirited, and unmistakably bold. On the nose, it greets with dried hay, malty biscuits, and apple skins, followed by a rustic warmth of wet leaves, heather, and a dash of gingerbread spice. There's a waxy, slightly funky depth that hints at its traditional worm-tub character. The palate is punchy and textured, delivering notes of toffee apple, bramble jam, and nutty malt loaf. A slight sulphuric edge — common in young Blair Athol — weaves into barley sugar, clove, and black tea, giving the dram an earthy robustness. The mouthfeel is dense and chewy, with underlying spice and tannin providing grip. The finish is medium-long and drying, with oak spice, malt extract, and a touch of bitter orange peel. It’s a whisky that wears its youthful edge proudly — raw yet rewarding, ideal for fans of characterful Highland malts.
