A rare and enigmatic release, the Madcuff 21 Year Old from That Boutique-y Whisky Company is as mysterious as its name. Bottled from an undisclosed source and cloaked in boutique eccentricity, this 21-year-old whisky delivers a deep and complex profile shaped by long maturation, likely in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks. The nose is rich and brooding — opening with aromas of dark dried fruits, fig jam, and molasses, layered over leather-bound books, toasted oak, and a faint touch of gunpowder spice. Hints of tobacco leaf, blackcurrant cordial, and sandalwood waft through as it opens in the glass. The palate is full-bodied and bold, with flavours of black cherry, dark chocolate ganache, and burnt orange peel, balanced by layers of dunnage warehouse mustiness, earthy spice, and herbal bitters. There’s a richness here that speaks of age and complexity — rum-soaked raisins, clove oil, and walnut skins unfold in waves. The finish is long, warm, and shadowy — lingering on spiced plum, dry sherry, and old wood polish, with a slightly tannic, almost resinous edge. It’s a dram for the deep thinker, the late-night sipper, or the collector who craves something off the beaten path.
