Bold, alpine, and wonderfully unconventional, the Säntis 10 Year Old from That Boutique-y Whisky Company is a captivating Swiss single malt matured in historic oak beer casks — a hallmark of the Appenzell-based distillery. After a decade of ageing, it offers a whisky that is distinctly malty, slightly wild, and full of character born from its unique cask heritage and high-altitude terroir. On the nose, it reveals deep aromas of dark malt, roasted nuts, and spiced fruit compote, intertwined with notes of leather, treacle, and a hint of dried hops. A subtle waft of smoke or burnt caramel may linger, evoking echoes of the cask’s previous life. The palate is rich and textured, offering a tapestry of toasted cereal, coffee grounds, fig jam, and oak spice. The beer cask influence imparts a robust umami depth — think dark rye bread, hazelnut, and spiced ginger cake. A background of earthy tannin and dried herbs creates structure and length The finish is long and slightly dry, with lasting impressions of cocoa nibs, clove, sandalwood, and a soft, resinous bitterness — reminiscent of the last sip of a barrel-aged stout.
